HERE & THERE - PART I

I have a lot to say today, but because of the length of this issue, I have only 400 words left to use before we go over our self-imposed 10,000 word limit. So here goes:

There are a number of great benefits coming up in the next few weeks, including one tonight (we try to include them in every issue)! All are for great causes but we want to direct your attention today to the listing way at the bottom of the listings section, on Saturday, April 10th on behalf of Gregory Kennell. All the details are there.

Sad news for cabaret: The Joey Reynolds show, heard for so many years nationwide on WOR (News Talk Radion 710) from Tuesday to Friday from midnight to 5:00 sam and on Saturday from midnight to 6:00 am. Millions of folks tuned in regularly, and Joey would interview scores of cabaret performers promoting their shows, even giving them a chance to performe a few songs. Now we've been told that the show will be discontinued - final airing to be on April 1st. Let's hope that this is an April Fool's story. We'll have more to say soon.

The first time I met Kevin Scott Hall was in the piano bar at EIGHTY EIGHT'S - soon after the club opened. He would drop by with another singer, a young lady who's name I can't remember, and together they would sing a few songs, before moving on to another piano bar (there used to be at least 7 or 8 others in the Village alone at that time). That's a long time ago. Over the years since, in addition to singing, he's become a songwriter, producer, director, journalist and master teacher. Kevin now adds novelist to his long list of accomplishments! His first novel, "Off the Charts!" about a young man who, having just received an inheritance, attempts to resurrect a one-hit-wonder dance diva's singing career. There will be a Book Launch Party at UNCLE CHARLIE'S (139 East 45th Street 2nd Floor, NYC - 212-661-9097 - ) on Wednesday, March 24th, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Hall will read from the novel and sign copies. He may even sing a few tunes with his friend Clare Cooper, who will be playing piano in the lounge.

Another set of memories, also centering around EIGHTY EIGHT'S came to mind this week as well, about a fellow by the name of John Barr. He came to town from London back in 1996 to appear in the Cabaret Convention and EIGHTY EIGHT'S with the release of his debut CD titled "A Small Affair". He's just released a new CD "All I Am", now available at Dress Circle , and I have been waiting for nearly 2 weeks for it to arrive (I actually have the original CD in my iTunes library). This is his 5th solo CD (I never received the other three, either), and it took over 3 years to record. He says this is his most personal collection of songs to date, and features four guest singers: Alison Jiear, Jenna Russell, David McAlmont and Rebecca Vere. When I finally receive it, I'll share my thoughts with you all.

Chicago based Three Cat Productions has just announced Three Cat Education and "A Summer in the Theater" programs that will be offered at THE SKOKIE THEATRE (7924 Lincoln Avenue, Skokie, IL - 847-677-7761 - ) beginning in June 2010. Lead by Jacque Lueken, Three Cat Education Executive Director, "A Summer in the Theater" will offer children and teens an opportunity to experience the world of theater and cabaret in a safe nurturing environment. Exploring musicals, plays, cabaret, and show choir, the camps will teach kids the fundamentals of performance with potential opportunities to appear in one of Three Cat Productions "Cabaret Concerts" as well as in venues throughout the Chicagoland area. "A Summer in the Theater" runs from June 14th to August 20th this summer. There are sections of various lengths and costs, and this sounds like a terrific program for youngsters. For more information about the program, or to register for "A Summer in the Theater" or Three Cat Education, visit http://www.threecatproductions.com/education !

NYC: MIKE SCHUIL PUTS HIS TOES IN THE SAND AT THE DUPLEX

Vocalist Mike Schuil brings his show "Toes In The Sand" to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ) on Friday, March 19th at 7:00 pm. The show marks Mike Schuil's return to New York cabaret for the first time since his well-received debut, "Songs From Across The River - Springsteen & Sinatra." This time he ventures a bit further afield from his native New Jersey for a mostly Brazilian evening of songs both lighthearted and dramatic. It's a warm, tropical breeze on a cold winter's night. Working with a trio of accomplished musicians (Wells Hanley on piano, Peter Brendler on bass, and Jeff Davis on drums) and teaming once again with director Gerry Geddes, Mike takes a big step forward as a cabaret performer. The show features songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Stephen Bishop, Richard Rodney Bennett and others. Of course, not wanting to journey too far away from his roots, there will be a few Sinatra moments, and even a bit of Bruce. His smooth vocals combined with the simmering sounds of his trio promise that "Toes In The Sand" should be a delightful trip south of the border. There is a $15 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

Congratulations to all the winners of this year's 25th Annual Bistro Awards, announced yesterday! Its unfortunate that, with BACK STAGE MAGAZINE no longer covering cabaret, the awards have lost some of the lustre they enjoyed over the past 24 years, when it had the backing of a nationwide and respected publication promoting them.

Sad to say, by the time the winner list arrived here yesterday, most of this issue was completed, so I have no space to include it today, but I will post the release on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website over the weekend.

The awards will be presented (and many of the winners will perform) at the BISTRO AWARDS GALA to be held at GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB (208 West 23rd Street, NYC - 212-367-9000 - ) on Tuesday, April 13th, with a champagne reception for the Bistro Award recipients and Premium ticket holders at 5:00 pm, followed by the awards presentation and show at 6:30 pm. Ticket prices are $45 general admission, $75 for premium seating plus a 2-drink minimum per person. To purchase show tickets, go to www.bistroawards.com

Don't forget to set your clocks ahead one hour on Sunday morning at 2:00 am (if you live in an area where Daylight Savings Time is observed). When I lived in Michigan (in another century, another lifetime) the part of the state I lived in did not change their clocks, and so part of the year we had the same time as my family in New Jersey, and part of the time we were aligned with Chicago time. I'm not sure if that is the case today (no time to google it).

Well, we've gone 700 words over the quota, so time to quit for today and we're once again publishing about an hour earlier than usual.

We have another newsletter to send out on Saturday especially for members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, and believe it or not, we're working on another new publication with a new format (and separate subscription list) to be announced in the MEMBERS ONLY issue this weekend! Plus we will announce a new, special ad deal for April & May that will allow folks who are nominated for a MAC award (to be announced on March 25th) to get their name out there for our 2700 subscribers and 6000 daily website visitors. This will be our best deal ever (we actually haven't raised our banner ad prices in years!). Space is limited and we want to give our members "first divs", so non-members will have to wait until Monday.

Did you remember to add the line MARCH IS CABARET MONTH to your website, with a link to http://www.MarchIsCabaret.com/ ? If you did, please send me an e-mail with your website address so I can add the link to the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH website! And, please add the phrase MARCH IS CABARET MONTH to your emails, show/CD promotional announcements and releases, and (if possible) to your fliers and post cards promoting events in March.

And that's just about the way it was. I still have a lot more to tell you about but we've run out of space so the rest will have to wait until Monday's issue.

Thanks for your support of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! Remember, MARCH IS CABARET MONTH!

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
