TODAY'S TOP STORY

AUS: THE GLAMOUR WEEKEND WITH NATALIE GAMSU & CAROLINE NIN
Melbourne's iconic THE BUTTERFLY CLUB (204 Bank Street, South Melbourne, VIC - 03 96902000 - http://www.thebutterflyclub.com/ ) presents "The Glamour Weekend" featuring two of the world's best credentialed cabaret stars. Natalie Gamsu, an internationally acclaimed performer who reached top of her field in South Africa and New York, now based in Sydney, returns in her new show HALLELUJAH TO HER on Thursday & Friday, November 27th & 28th at 9:00 pm. The headline act from THE LIDO in Paris, Caroline Nin, is returning for the following two nights, Saturday, November 29th at 9:00 pm and Sunday, November 30th at 8:00 pm with her new show HYMNE A PIAF.

Born and raised in Nairobi, Natalie Gamsu developed a high profile career in South Africa, before touring Europe and then in New York after moving to the US in 1992. She became one of New York's headline cabaret divas, winning the Backstage Bistro Award in 1994 for Outstanding Vocalist and the Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs Award for Outstanding Female Vocalist in 1997, and again in 2000.

HALLELUJAH TO HER is a celebration of women and all their divine quirks, bound together with an eclectic string of classics, from Henry Purcell to Sondheim to Charles Aznavour. This magical journey features a cast of funny, moving and crazy characters including a Southern couple, Baby and Daddy, married at thirteen and still going strong; Michelle, an angry Spanish woman whose husband cheats, 'But she is no victim!' and Mrs. Rabinowitz who has decided that it's time to die, but not before her game of bridge. The 'Priestess' loves them all. And sings to them. The show is written and performed by Ms. Gamsu, accompanied by Mark Jones on piano. Tickets are $32.

Caroline Nin has been described as the very essence of her countrywoman Edith Piaf, France's most famous chanteuse. As captivating and intriguing as the 'Little Sparrow', she is the epitome of style and class as she croons; she purrs and sings in perfect English, French and German. Her singing and theatrical presentation heightens both established torch songs and cabaret standards to a mesmerizing level.

Caroline Nin's HYMNE A PIAF is her tribute to Piaf. Caroline's frank, tender and moving rendition offers spine-chilling and spirited versions of familiar anthems such as 'Non', 'Je Ne Regrette Rien' and 'Padam Padam'. Tickets are $42.

HERE & THERE - PART I
This is a long issue today, because I am trying to jam-pack as much news as possible in the listings section today and Monday, since there will be no issue on Thursday, November 27th (Thanksgiving USA). I will have to trim back a little on the HERE & THERE sections

The cold weather continues here in NYC - we dropped below 32 degrees (f) - freezing - for the first time this fall on Tuesday night - it was 27 degrees yesterday morning when I ran across the street to get some milk at 8:00 am. This morning it was in the low 30s so I guess one can call that a "warming trend."

Happy Birthday to long-time CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE supporter and good friend Sue Matsuki. It is one of those "ending in a zero" milestone Birthdays, and there is a special party on her behalf (long sold out) tonight at DON'T TELL MAMA at 8:15 pm. It isn't quite a surprise party, since Sue knows the date, time and place, but she hasn't been told who will be performing in her honor. I think I am on the reservation list - I will have to check with MAMA'S after 4:00 pm.

This "ending with a zero" birthday stuff seems to be going around lately - rarely seen in NYC, vocalist Barbara Seith celebrates her "special day" at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on Saturday, December 13th at 2:00 pm. And of course I will celebrate my big "70" on July 6th, 2009 with the biggest, bestest, most exciting CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BIRTHDAY PARTY ever - the HOTLINE will be 19 years old - starting its 20th record year of publication! Exact date, time and place to be announced at our March 10th MARCH IS CABARET MONTH celebration at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN.

MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) has elected its new Board of Directors for 2008-09 - here's the list of officers and board members:

Ricky Ritzel - President
Lennie Watts - Vice President
Jan Grossberg - Treasurer
Jenna Esposito- Secretary
Scott Barbarino
Hector Coris
Ruth Kurtzman - Membership Director
Joseph Macchia
Sidney Myer - Volunteer Coordinator
Eric Pickering
Peter Rapanaro

Congratulations to all.

Thoughts and prayers go out to two very special people today: Boston area cabaret icon John O'Neil will undergo gall bladder surgery on the day before Thanksgiving, November 26th. His usual Friday night shift entertaining the folks at FRANK'S STEAK HOUSE (2310 Massachusetts Avenue, North Cambridge, MA - 617-661-0666 - http://www.frankssteakhouse.com/ ) is being covered by the fantastic Jan Peters (an icon in her own right).

Meantime, my favorite brother-in-law Roger Van Harn (and my only surviving brother-in-law) has been diagnosed with adult hydrocephilus and is awaiting a decision regarding possible surgery to relieve the pressure on the brain. He is in his mid-70s and a retired pastor - and longtime spiritual support to all my widespread family, performing the marriages and officiating at the funerals and providing counseling without hesitation. He is a writer, speaker, pastor, minister, missionary and church (local and denominational) leader who was extremely instrumental many years ago in bringing his denomination into the first steps to acknowledging the gifts of women in the church. It was a tough struggle and his convictions and fortitude at times brought him contempt from less forward-looking leaders in the church. When I was a kid, women were not even permitted to vote on church affairs. Today, thanks to leaders like Rog, women now serve as ordained pastors and serve in the church's annual synods (a Presbyterian form of church government).

And on an extremely personal note, Rog has been a strength to me over the years, from the day we met fully accepting me for who and what I am (I'm a little different than the other five "Hamstra kids.") Whenever he and my sister came to visit from Michigan, he always made it a point to spend some special personal time with me to check on how I was doing. My special thoughts are with him and my sister Eleanor - she was a registered nurse for many years, so I am sure she is very much concerned and involved in her husband's care. I look forward to many more year's of Rog's friendship, advice and counsel.

(OK, sorry to get perhaps a little to personal - perhaps more information than you care to read - these newsletters are sort of a free flow of my thoughts - please excuse.)

SPECIAL NOTE: A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE - If you wish an item published in the newsletter and on the website, just e-mail a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your cabaret related event. Send photos in jpg or gif format as attachments if available. Be sure to send the names of your musical director and director, and the names of others in your show. Include the name of the show, the date and time of event, and the venue name, address and reservation phone number - and cover/minimum information. Also send the website address of the venue if available. Please send complete information - and please do not merely e-mail a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.

If you want to get in on the HOLIDAY SPECIAL SIDE-BAR BANNER sale - 4 weeks for the price of 3 - you better hurry, since the offer expires at the end of December, which means your ad has to start by December 1st to get its full 4-week run. Space is limited. It's just $75 for a 4-week run (that comes out to $18.75 per week - and the ad appears every time (not in rotation) on over 40 pages on the website, with a prime position on the home page - top right corner.

LAURA HULL RELEASE NEW CD: "TAKE ME HOME"
ONE OF CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BEST OF 2008 CD WINNERS
Laura Hull is celebrating the release of her debut jazz vocal CD, "Take Me Home." This recording is the result of Laura's desire to record a CD of the music she loves to perform live. In her early years, Laura spent time as a versatile session and jingles singer while also developing her own fresh musical personality. In her successful one-woman show "No Regrets" and her many performances since, she has shown that she is a melodic jazz singer who has a real feel for the Great American Songbook. Laura had a strong success with her previous CD of original music, "Hullabaloo," and now continues on the same high level with her debut jazz vocal CD, "Take Me Home." The CD was chosen by cabaret writer/reviewer John Hoglund as the ONE OF THE Outstanding CDs of 2008 in the Cabaret Hotline Online's "CDs for the Holidays" Showcase event. ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE

REGARDING NEWS ITEMS IN THIS NEWSLETTER
To keep the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletters as short as possible, while including as many news items as possible, we only include an item in the newsletter once - unless the event is one that has an ad running on the website, weekly events that feature special guests, cabaret related benefits, cabaret organization events and cabaret "festivals." All items mentioned in the newsletter are added to the DIARY/DATEBOOK pages of the website, and the headline of each item in the DIARY/DATEBOOK will be included in the newsletter going forward for seven days. That way, if you see the headline in the newsletter, you can go to the website for further details. Any event offering a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be included in every Thursday issue. REMEMBER: A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II
I only got to attend one event since Monday's issue, and that was on Monday night at 8:00 pm at THE TOWN HALL. It was perhaps the brightest spot on the show calendar of 2008 - the 5th ANNUAL BROADWAY UNPLUGGED SHOW. Featuring star performers from both Broadway and Cabaret, this show is always a winner - and this year's show was so fantastic that neither my pal Daniel (who, like me, never misses an "unplugged" show) could not decide afterwards on any single performance in the show that was better than any of the others! Just look at the cast: Aaron Lazar, Ashley Brown, Marc Kudisch, Jeff McCarthy, Julia Murney, Matt Cavenaugh, Cheryl Freeman, Christiane Noll, William Michals, Lorinda Lisitza, Chuck Cooper, Erin Denman, Bill Daugherty, and Ron Bohmer. With clever, pithy introductions to each number by Scott Siegel - each song is researched and explained. Plus a quartet of singer/dancers to liven up the proceedings - and let's not forget the incredible Ross Paterson and "The Little Big Band."

Two special high points for me, personally. When I was in college - nearly 50 years ago - I had an original cast LP of MUSIC MAN and played it so much that I knew the words of "Trouble" by heart! So, when Ron Bohmer stepped on stage with the chorus as backup, I had to stop myself from "singing along"! I still remembered nearly every word! Such fun! And the second was the most inspired choice of a 7-month pregnant Christiane Noll to sing "The Story Goes On" from BABY. So tender, so eloquent, so special, so touching - I literally was in tears (I told Daniel I had something in my eye).

Some little asides - if they ever write the Broadway show JOEL OSTEEN - THE MUSICAL, I nominate Aaron Lazar for the title role. Lorinda Lisitza did cabaret proud with her contribution - "Pirate Jenny" from THREE PENNY OPERA. Is there anyone in the world with a brighter (and shyer) smile than Matt Cavanaugh - who shone with his "Sometimes a Day Goes By"? And William Michaels - although a little too "dramatic" in "If I Can't Love Her" has a voice I could listen to for hours. Same goes for Chuck Cooper.

And that's the secret - pure vocals without a sound designer trying to improve the natural. Just the absence of "reverb" (which some performers over use to cover up vocal flaws) was refreshing.

Running just a few minutes of 2 hours (including intermission) the show breezed along with nary a dull moment - so quickly the audience seemed stunned when it ended. I know it probably took a hundred hours or more to create and rehearse and took only 125 glorious minutes to present - but it was recorded for a future CD so if you missed it you can still get a chance to savor it.

Next Scott Siegel production is THE 2009 NIGHTLIFE AWARDS on Monday, January 26th at 7:00 pm at THE TOWN HALL - tickets are already on sale at www.ticketmaster.com.

Don't overlook an extra chance to promote your Holiday Themed CD - we have a special page listing and displaying HOLIDAY CABARET CDs released by cabaret performers. If you have a CD that fits into this category, check if yours is included - if not, send in the information along with a jpg of the cover and a link where it can be purchased and I will include it. By the way, if you have released such a CD and it is no longer available, please check out the page and if it is still there, let me know so I can take it down.

And there's more! If you have a Holiday Themed show coming up before the end of the year, and haven't sent me a press release yet, send it right away. We are creating another special page - in "diary/datebook" format - listing all such events - they will also be included in the newsletter and in the regular DIARY/DATEBOOK section of the website. Once more - its free to all - membership not required.

SPECIAL NOTE: A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE - Just e-mail a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your cabaret related event.

Are you a songwriter? Check out CabaretSings - (http://www.cabaretsings.com/ ), a website to promote the songs and songwriters of cabaret. Listing and a special bio-song-list page on the CABARETSINGS.COM website is FREE to songwriter members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE through July 5th, 2009. Non-members can have a page this year for $20 - which includes a SILVER membership. This website should be a great advantage to songwriters who do not have a website or for whom maintaining a website is too expensive. If you want more details, send me an email at stuhamstra@cabaretsings.com.

I know MARCH may seem awfully far off, but if you are planning a cabaret event for the month of March 2009, please send me a press release as early as you can. Once again we will be celebrating MARCH IS CABARET MONTH and have a special website (http://www.marchiscabaretmonth.com/ ) to promote this special time of year. As press releases for March 2009 cabaret events come in, we will post them on this website - even if they haven't appeared on the newsletter yet. Then we will include them in the newsletter as March approaches. We will be updating you in the weeks to come about cabaret shows and cabaret organization celebrations around the world. Stay tuned.

SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday, March 10th at 7:00 pm at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN: The Second Annual CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - MARCH IS CABARET MONTH CELEBRATION (http://www.MarchIsCabaretMonth.com/ ).

If you subscribe to these newsletters and have not yet become a member, isn't it time? CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 2008-2009 member number 351 (Hilary Feldman, Chicago area) signed up last night. We're still trying to reach our record-breaking goal of 500 members for the year by April 1, 2009 (after May 1st all new memberships are for the 2009-2010 year) - still 149 to go. The record is currently 478 set last membership year. A basic SILVER membership is still just $20. Joining is simple - just click on the button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page of the website. You can even join and donate instantly using a credit card, debit card or e-check via PayPal - all the benefits are shown on that page, as well as the various levels of membership. Or you can donate the old fashioned way, by paper check - just remember, all checks should be made out simply to STU HAMSTRA and mailed to 75-22 37th Avenue #35 - Jackson Heights, NY 11372.

Don't get discouraged if your show in the next few months or so aren't sell-outs. I have been receiving reports from all over the country from performers reporting a 20% to 30% drop in attendance to their shows from normal. The economic hard times have hit cabaret and other live entertainment productions, What this should mean is everyone has to work harder to perform their best - people are making choices as to where to spend their entertainment dollar. Offer good value and they will come.

I covered nearly all the news through December 4th but I have lots of December items still on file - including a number of Holiday show releases to also put on the special Holiday website page. Since we can only cover a new item once in these newsletters (with exception of shows running ads or offering discounts, benefits and organization events) be sure to check the DIARY/DATEBOOK pages, organized by date, for events coming up that have already been written on in the newsletter before sending me an e-mail wondering why your item didn't run - you may have missed it. We also list headlines for all upcoming events already covered for "seven nights out" in the newsletter at the bottom of each date.

I hope you at least scanned the news and listings items in this issue - there are a lot of great shows listed with a lot of great performers and a lot of great songs and show themes. Is your event listed? Send me that press release! REMEMBER: A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE.

And that is just about the way it was. Support cabaret and live entertainment - see a show or two this week!

Until Monday, then.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
