HERE & THERE
Our first MEMBERS' CHOICE poll for the 2008-2009 membership year has begin - with nominations being accepted until midnight, Friday August 29th. Remember the night you attended a cabaret show and you hear a song that so totally touched your heart you thought maybe the songwriter had you or your life experiences in mind when it was written? There are several songs that have hit me that way. Now we are asking 2008-2009 members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to nominate their most cherished contemporary cabaret songs, after which all members will be voting for the three member favorites. The song should be one that any performer can use as part of their cabaret show - not special material written for a particular performer. Only one nomination per member please.

The best way to describe what a "cabaret song" is would be to give some examples, so I have chosen (and nominated) four songs that are among my favorites (I'm allowed to pick four because I can). Just click on the NOMINEE'S TO DATE link (http://www.svhamstra.com/MembersChoiceSongPrelim08.shtml ) to see my choices and any nominations others may have entered. Where available, I also included a website link to the songwriter as well as a link to the place on iTunes where you can download the song. (I could only find 2 or the 4 I nominated.)

A ballot containing the songs which have been nominated will be sent by e-mail to all 2008-2009 CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members of record as of August 29, 2008 for voting. The voting will be done by e-mail in September - deadline for the return of ballots is midnight, Friday September 19th. The top 3 choices will be announced as quickly as possible after Wednesday, October 1, 2008.

For full information about the MEMBERS' CHOICE voting see http://www.svhamstra.com/MembersChoiceSong08.shtml

I am in the midst of changing over to a new mailing application to send out the newsletters as well as handle all my correspondence. Currently the newsletter subscription list of over 2600 e-mail addresses is on the old e-mail app, and the membership lists of the past 9 years are on the new app, from time to time you might receive more than one "automated response" to any inquiries, payments, etc. that you send in. The new program will allow me to send out e-mails from any computer - and I want to have it totally up and running by the end of the month. Up to now I have been able to do much of the switchover automatically, but the subscription list contains duplicate addresses of the ones already added and there will need to be a lot of manual operations to make it all work. Fortunately there will be no CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on Monday, September 1st (LABOR DAY - USA) so that will give me an extra few days to test the new setup. Stay tuned.

Speaking of the LABOR DAY WEEKEND, I will forego my usual "Islands Tour" this year (normally I spend the day on the subway and/or ferry boat visiting Coney, Manhattan and Staten Islands in one day-long adventure). This year I am actually going to travel outside the five boroughs and am off to St. Louis, MO. If you recall, several issues ago I wrote about another new venue - "Casual Cabaret" - which will make its premier at the new KRANZBERG ART CENTER STUDIO THEATRE (501 North Grand Street, St. Louis, MO - 314-795-8778) on Saturday, August 30th (details in the listings below). Thanks to the good people who are running this new space, I will be flying to St. Louis to help them celebrate. There will be a "meet & greet" after the Saturday night show and I hope to have a chance to chat with many of the folks in the area who subscribe to the newsletter.

Now for something special - and for this I need all subscribers and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MEMBERS in the St. Louis area to take note. If enough interest is shown, there will be a 90-minute seminar on cabaret on Saturday, August 30th at 11:00 am at the venue. This event will not be so much a time for you to meet me as a time for me to meet you - and share together our thoughts, experiences, questions and even complaints about the art of cabaret. It will be by far more anecdotal than technical - and I will share with you my own thoughts based on over 30 years of attending cabaret events and nearly 20 years of writing about cabaret.

Cost will be just $10 to help defray the costs of the event - and for just $10 more, attendees will be able to purchase a SILVER 2008-2009 membership for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (a $20 value). I will be taking along a few CDs to give away as well in connection with our new MEMBERS' CHOICE poll which began over the weekend. Call 314-795-8778 if you are interested. Don't wait until the last minute - if there is not enough interest shown, the event will not be held.

My flight to St. Louis is on Thursday afternoon, August 28th - arriving around dinner time. It will be a long day for me since I will probably be up around 5:30 am to get Thursday's newsletter out, so there are no events planned for me for Thursday night. In fact, since I am unable to take my sidekick Daniel along, he probably has some "going away party" planned for Wednesday night, and Daniel's parties have a reputation of lasting well into the wee hours of the morning. I return to NYC on Sunday around noon.

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 2008-2009 member number 287 (Sarah DeLeo - NYC) signed up overnight. We're are well on our way to our record breaking goal of 500 members for the year (after May 1st all new memberships are for the 2009-2010 year) the record is currently 478 set last membership year. I have free CDs set aside for member #299 & #300 - only 12 more needed. I hope we can sign up our 500th member in time for our 2009 MARCH IS CABARET MONTH™ event.

A basic SILVER membership is still just $20. Joining is simple - just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or click on the button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page of the website. You can even join and donate instantly using a credit card, debit card or e-check via PayPal - all the benefits are shown on that page, as well as the various levels of membership. Or you can donate the old fashioned way, by paper check - just remember, all checks should be made out simply to STU HAMSTRA and mailed to 75-22 37th Avenue #35 - Jackson Heights, NY 11372.

Of course you will get a membership card, discounts off of select entertainment events, a page to promote your CD (if you have one), a chance to vote in our MEMBERS' CHOICE polls (see item above), and other benefits. But most of all, the main benefit of membership is knowing that you are helping us publicize the events and performers of cabaret, jazz and comedy. You must join as a member before Friday, August 29th to take part in the first 2008-2009 MEMBERS' CHOICE nominations and by Friday, September 19th to take part in the voting.

Another reminder: There will be no issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter on LABOR DAY, Monday, September 1st.

This week we have just 4 banners running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website this week - a new record low count. Two banners expired over the weekend and one new banner was added (and this banner was actually paid for about a month ago). Normally we have around 15 banners running, which means our income has fallen to a new low as well. Now is a great time to run a banner - the banners appear at random and this week each banner will be displayed 1 out of 2 times either at the top or the bottom of nearly every one of the more than 6000 pages on the site! I can have one up and running for you in just 24 hours - even faster if you send me the banner! Cost for 3 weeks regular size banner is less than $38 per week - displayed up to 20,000 times a day and mentioned in every issue of the twice-weekly newsletter sent to over 2,600 subscribers. Just click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website for all the types and styles of banners and other ad opportunities.

29 of out of 110 charter members (folks who have been CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members since the membership program started) still need to join for the new year and I am hopeful that they will come through before the end of this month to help us make it through the summer into September. They will all be getting a reminder e-mail later today.

This has been a tough summer for all (OK, for almost all). I did some grocery shopping last week Thursday (5% senior discount day) and noted that not only have food prices climbed considerably, but also packages that used to contain 16 oz. of a product, for instance, are now showing 14 oz. on the label - same package! Ever try to buy a pound of coffee? Looks like the same size can as before but now reads 13 oz.! Milk is now far more expensive per gallon than gasoline! I am now purchasing "store brands" to keep within my budget. In fact, I would have a hard time affording a CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE membership myself this week! (If you can't afford to join right now, drop me a note - there may be a way you can "join now - pay later" and still even get to vote in the new MEMBERS' CHOICE poll!)

I recently updated the MEMBERSHIP pages on the website, so if you joined as a member before August 12th, please check to make sure your name, city and website links (if applicable) are all correct. I will be sending out another batch of membership cards later today or tomorrow (I print them in batches of 10).

Don't forget, PIANO BAR/OPEN MIC listings for seven days a week are now found on the website rather than being included each week in the newsletter (exceptions are open-mic events featuring special guests and/or running an ad on the website). See http://www.svhamstra.com/CabaretPianoBars.shtml

More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - last minute items that come in just before we "go to press" as well as a report on shows seen since the last issue.

MORE "HERE & THERE"
I did get a chance to attend three cabaret events since last week Thursday's issue. So far I only have one event on my schedule before this Thursday's issue - there simply aren't that many shows schedule in the next few days (DON'T TELL MAMA has no shows scheduled for tonight & tomorrow night - I've seen Annie Ross' show at the METROPOLITAN ROOM several times already - I wish I knew more about shows at THE DUPLEX but for some reason performers doing shows there rarely send me releases or information - there's a CABARET CARES benefit tonight at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN, but I try to pay the cover charges when I go to benefit shows and I can't afford it right now - the performer at BROADWAY BABY tonight apparently doesn't want press coverage - he sent me a note rejecting any e-mails from me for some reason).

So the next show on my schedule is Marty Geiger on Wednesday night at DON'T TELL MAMA - I hope I can get a reservation - I hear this one is another "winner"!

On Friday night, August 15th, I was back at DON'T TELL MAMA for Tommy Femia's fantastic JUDY, LIVE! show at 9:00 pm. I have written about this show several (maybe dozens of) times but, like a moth to the flame, I keep going back. Each show changes (Tommy has been appearing once a month of late, and at an earlier hour than before) so it is always a treat. The amazing thing about this particular performance was the number of rather inebriated gentlemen (and maybe a few ladies) who kept interrupting the show - one of whom even tried to get on stage to sing and dance with Judy (Tommy). Now this show was scheduled for 9:00 pm so these folks must have started drinking in MAMAs piano bar or somewhere else before the show. It was a struggle, I am sure, but Tommy kept his cool, kept the show going, and it almost seemed that the mayhem was part of the script. Musical director Christopher Denny had difficulty keeping a straight face during the peformance, and bartender/waiter Randy Lester spent a good bit of time herding wandering audience members back to their seats or shushing them as they insisted on talking during the performance (one of whom was actually a bartender at another cabaret club and should have known better). Much fun (and for some, too much fun) was had by all.

I next walked the few blocks downtown to meet Daniel for another AFTER PARTY open-mic event at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN. Brandon Cutrell and Alysha Umphress host this weekly Friday night event - which starts somewhere around 10:30 pm and runs until no one is left standing. You never know who is going to turn up to sing - youngsters from Broadway doing their "audition songs" or established stars from the great white way to sing a number or two. Musical director Ray Fellman has about 100 songbooks and "fake books" stacked on the piano to assist any performer. Brandon also awards free "shots" at various times to audience members, names drawn from a shiny steel bucket. It is truly a party - Luba Mason was the announced guest star from Broadway this night. Neither Daniel or I had dinner, so we feasted on a 3-plate special they offered on their late night menu, including pizza, fried calamari and the WEST BANK CAFE's own take on macs & Cheese. Incredible!

Biggest treat of the week was Karen Oberlin and Miles Phillips' duet show at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on Sunday afternoon, August 17th, at 4:00 pm. Three award-winning performers (if you include Tracy Stark at the piano - and you must) in a show that just might win an award of its own. The show was called "The Pleasure of Your Company" and included an amazing selection of songs to make the point that that Broadway folks can sing jazz and jazz folks can sing Broadway, and when you put them together you have total pleasure. Standout numbers were Karen & Miles in duet singing Tracy Stark's original "Coffee"; Karen's solo on "Fifty Percent"; Miles' solo of "My Romance" and a duet of a rarely heard Billy Strayhorn piece "Still In Love With You." But the "total package" was what made this show so memorable, down to the encore that will have you enthralled (I'm not going to give it away). The show returns in September on Sunday the 14th at 4:00 pm. It is one of those delightful, entertaining and fun shows that makes you happy you were there. If you like cabaret you will love this one!

Time to go - the morning simply flew by and I have more to write but no more time. Don't forget, piano bar and open mic items now appear in a new section on the website (currently still under construction). Just click on the button at the top of every page on the website marked PIANO/OPEN MIC or click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/CabaretPianoBars.shtml

I hope you at least scanned the news and listings items in this issue - there are a lot of great shows listed with a lot of great performers and a lot of great songs and show themes. Is your event listed? Send me that press release!

And that is just about the way it was.

Until Thursday, then.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
