HERE & THERE
I'm afraid I got off to a late start this morning. It was one of those mornings when you wake up, look at the clock, see that it is 10 minutes to seven, and decide to just sleep another 10 minutes (much neater to start "on the hour.") So you doze off, wake up 10 minutes later and note that the clock now says 8:45!

Well I do have a bit of an excuse. I got home rather late last night - or as my room mate said "Early this morning." It is partly due to the fact that after 1:00 am, if I miss the cross-town bus at the half-hour mark, I have to wait another hour to get a bus to my street. I missed the 2:30 am bus by three minutes, thanks to construction delays coming in from Queens on the F train (that is the official train name - not an expletive). A taxi was out of the questions - cost would be close to $10 before tip. And anyway, it was an interesting wait - in NYC you never quite know what to expect at 2:30 am.

And I do have an excuse for being out in Queens that late: We were celebrating Daniel's release from the hospital and the delivery of his new TV on the same day (his TV - which was a four-year-old hand-me-down I gave him when I moved into Manhattan from Queens over a year ago - gave up the ghost three weeks ago). The hospital stay was just overnight, and was totally unexpected thanks to two rather unsavory (and possibly drunk) fellows who decided Daniel was an easy target for a mugging when he stepped out of his house at 7:00 am on Tuesday to get some coffee. He was clocked in the head with a rock (Daniel's head won), but the folks in the emergency room decided he better spend the night for "observation." (I've been observing Daniel for over five years and I could have told them he always acts that way).

Great news: Folks in Toronto finally have a cabaret/jazz room again, thanks to the efforts of George Evans (see TODAY'S TOP STORY). You have no idea how many e-mails I receive each week from folks in the "hinterlands" who are craving cabaret. Thanks to folks like D.C. Anderson, who tries to put on a cabaret show in every town he visits as he tours with the road company of PHANTOM, cabaret occasionally is available in out-of-the-way places. (D.C. is becoming cabaret's Johnny Appleseed!) But in many places places (like South Florida, where my younger sister lives) cabaret events are hardly ever presented.

And last issue we noted that Wesla Whitfield and Mike Greensill are performing (starting tonight) at a new venue in the Napa valley - and Terese Genecco opens a new club tomorrow night in Redwood City, CA. These events are noted in the listings below.

Several issues ago I wrote about another new venue - this one in St. Louis, MO - "Casual Cabaret" - which will make its premier at the new KRANZBERG ART CENTER STUDIO THEATRE on Saturday, August 30th (details in the listings below). And marking my first "road trip" in several years, and thanks to the good people who are running this new space, I will be flying to St. Louis (birthplace of Lennie Watts, according to WIKIPEDIA) to help them celebrate. There will be a "meet & greet" after the Saturday night show and I hope to have a chance to chat with many of the folks in the area who subscribe to the newsletter. Plus, if enough interest is shown, there will be a 90-minute seminar on cabaret on Saturday at 11:00 am at the venue. Cost will be just $10 to help defray the costs of the event - and for just $10 more, attendees will be able to purchase a SILVER 2008-2009 membership for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (a $20 value). Call 314-795-8778 if you are interested. I will be taking along a few CDs to give away as well in connection with our new MEMBERS' CHOICE poll which will begin this weekend.

I actually did visit St. Louis once - many years ago, probably in 1953 or 1954. It was one of the stops on a rather extensive family vacation where the Hamstras travelled to and from Linden, WA (almost on the Canadian border in far-west Washington State) where we picked up my grandfather who was visiting his sister and several brothers who lived there. We traveled as far south as the Texas panhandle, all the way to Los Angeles (via Las Vegas, Death Valley, Hoover Dam, etc.) then north through San Francisco, Portland and Seattle, to little Linden (a Dutch enclave). Then back home through Montana and Alberta (more relatives lived in a little town near Edmonton called Neerlandia) and Salt Lake City, Grand Canyon, and a host of other places (Mt. Rushmore, Chicago, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Ontario, Rochester) and finally back home. A whirlwind tour with so many adventures and mishaps (we returned in 2 cars). I think we sort of followed the same route that D.C. Anderson is taking with PHANTOM. But this was done in a 4-door Studebaker with two adults and four kids - and no air conditioning. Did I mention that we spent most nights camping in two pup tents? Do families take these kind of trips nowadays?

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 2008-2009 member number 282 (Carolyn Wehner of Wisconsin) signed up overnight. We're now well on our way to our record breaking goal of 500 members for the year - the record is currently 478 set last membership year. A basic SILVER membership is still just $20. Joining is simple - just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or click on the button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page of the website! You can even join and donate instantly using a credit card and PayPal - all the benefits are shown on that page, as well as the various levels of membership. Or you can donate the old fashioned way - just remember, all checks should be made out simply to STU HAMSTRA and mailed to 75-22 37th Avenue #35 - Jackson Heights, NY 11372.

Of course you will get a membership card, discounts off of select entertainment events, a page to promote your CD (if you have one), a chance to vote in our MEMBERS' CHOICE polls (see item above), and other benefits. But most of all, the main benefit of membership is knowing that you are helping us publicize the events and performers of cabaret, jazz and comedy. You must join as a member before Friday, August 29th to take part in the first 2008-2009 MEMBERS' CHOICE nominations and by Friday, September 19th to take part in the voting.

Another reminder: There will be no issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter on LABOR DAY, Monday, September 1st.

This week we have just 5 banners running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website this week - a record low count. And two of the banners will expire over the weekend bringing us down to just three! Normally we have around 15 banners running. And all 3 banners were paid for some time ago, which means our income has fallen to a new low as well. Now is a great time to run a banner - the banners appear at random and this week each banner will be displayed 1 out of 1 1/2 times either at the top or the bottom of nearly every one of the more than 6000 pages on the site! Just click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website for all the types and styles of banners and other ad opportunities.

More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - last minute items that come in just before we "go to press" as well as a report on shows seen since the last issue.

MORE "HERE & THERE"
It has been three days since our last issue, and it was one of those periods when I was really busy working on the website and the new MEMBERS' CHOICE poll and still woke up this morning feeling like I had accomplished nothing since Monday! I almost sent out an e-mail yesterday to all members announcing the contest (which involves songs and songwriters). I built the description/rules page, the polling form page and the "thank you for your nomination" page, wrote the membership letter and then hit a snag. You see, in order to explain what it was we were looking for in the form of nominations, I made 4 nominations myself (I can do this because I can). I wanted to link my nominations to audio files on the web, and discovered that for two of my nominees, there were no audio files to link to! I know they are out these somewhere, and hope to have it all ready tomorrow, starting the nominating process on Friday.

Meantime, I did manage to get a haircut and do my laundry and grocery shopping, and see one cabaret show!

As planned, I made it to Gabrielle Stravelli's show on Tuesday night, August 12th at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN. I've been a fan of this talented young lady since her days performing at THE DUPLEX several years ago. She has astounding vocals, and is a charismatic entertainer. And, not unlike Anthony Santelmo, Jr., she "seeks out the tunes!" Her song choices ran from Johnny Mercer to Bob Marley, to Joni Mitchell to Duke Ellington! Songs written by folks who wrote for The Kinks, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd - with even a Kurt Weill/Ogden Nash tune and one by Johnny Burke & Jimmy Van Heusen. My apologies to Peter Haas, but how eclectic can you get? All this plus a "smokin'" band that included the most cheerful drummer in town! And that is the real special thing that Gabriella does (and has been doing all these years): She takes great and unusual songs, inspires her talented and loyal band to give them a new dimension, and celebrates the whole package to a most enthusiastic following (I would swear that some in the audience Tuesday night were there at her debut shows at THE DUPLEX!).

Next show I plan to see is Tommy Femia's JUDY LIVE! on Friday night at DON'T TELL MAMA. I hope many of you will join me there (not much else going on in town on Friday) and maybe also join me at Brandon Cutrell's AFTER PARTY at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN at around 10:45 pm. I will double up on my CENTRUM SILVER to prepare for the evening's excitement!

Guess what? We managed to trim this issue to less just 9,500 words - even less than Monday's issue. Don't forget, piano bar and open mic items now appear in a new section on the website (currently still under construction). Just click on the button at the top of every page on the website marked PIANO/OPEN MIC or click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/CabaretPianoBars.shtml

I hope you at least scanned the news and listings items in this issue - there are a lot of great shows listed with a lot of great performers and a lot of great songs and show themes. Is your event listed? Send me that press release!

And that is just about the way it was.

Until Monday, then.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
