HERE & THERE
I have a lot of work to do today so I am trying to get this issue out just a little early - and I have included so much news in this issue, I don't have much space for the "Here & There" notes!

In the past several issues I have been including Piano Bar/Open Mic items in the daily listings section - these are events that occur every week - or sometimes every other week. And as the year progresses, they take more and more space in each issue. Question: are these listings helpful to you? I have tried to figure out an alternate way to present them - of course they appear in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section, and we might build a simple "Open Mic" page on the website which will show open mic events for the full week, wherever and whenever we find out about them. Please let me have your thoughts.

Peter Haas wrote a cute poem about the overuse of the word "eclectic" used by performers to describe their show's song list - a pet gripe of his. My "pet gripe" is the demise and/or disparagement of "the encore." Performers have come to skip an encore (like having a sumptuous meal and then omitting the dessert course) or even worse, mock the encore tradition. If you skip the encore, in my thinking, it means you are either disappointed in a poor reaction to your show on the part of the audience or you realize you performed poorly and are too ashamed to do another song. And to mock the encore shows disrespect to your audience's genuine wish for "one more song" (sort of like a bonus track on your CD).

The best encore I ever experienced was the last time Barb Jungr performed at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM. It was opening night, Barb performed brilliantly, many in the audience were on their feet applauding at the end of the show. But Barb and her accompanist left the stage and walked completely out of the room! The sustained applause soon (but not instantly) brought her and her pianist back to the stage - to more applause and cheers - and she went on to sing one more song. How many performers would dare to do this? I don't know if Barb did this at every show of that run, and I don't know if she will repeat this when she returns to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM for the first three weeks in September. But that moment will always be in my memory. So let's not overlook and ridicule the encore - lets keep the tradition alive. If you are happy with your performance, and the audience seems happy with your performance, applaud them back with "one more for the road" - and show that you mean it!

One more announcement for any lyricists out there: an experienced composer with a decided cabaret/theatrical bent seeks lyricist with the goal of developing a successful creative partnership. A strong interest in the development of material with serious social/political content would be a major plus. He is based here in the NYC area - and is well known in cabaret circles. Send me an e-mail with the word LYRICIST in the subject line with a short bio and contact information and I'll pass it along.

I was going to try to get this issue out without another plea for membership donations, but I just looked in my wallet and checked my bank account and .... what was the name of that movie? "Less Than Zero" ... well not quite but close to zero. But at least we managed to get the rent paid on time. We added only two more members since Thursday's tally. We will add a banner later today, but the check hasn't come in yet and three banners expire this weekend. Funds don't seem to stay in my account (or wallet) more that a few days lately with no cushion for emergencies. One person wrote in (rather angrily) that since they joined last November they could not understand why their membership ran out on July 5th. Please note - your membership (like every other membership organization that I know of) is for a particular membership year - it isn't a "one year membership." Right now we are ending the first month of our 2008-2009 membership year, and if you want to get the most value, now is the time to join or rejoin.

As mentioned above, we signed on our 261st CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE member Saturday (Janet Hariton - NYC area)! We're now more than half way to our 2008-2009 CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE membership goal of 500! Thanks once more to all for this amazing and most gratifying show of support! Click on this link: http://www.svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or click on the button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page on the website to read about all the benefits and details of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE membership.

More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - last minute items that come in just before we "go to press" as well as a report on shows seen since the last issue.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form. Events advertised on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every MIDWEEK issue. As with all live entertainment events, performers are subject to change without notice.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
To get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website, in the DATEBOOK/DIARY and in the twice-weekly newsletter, just e-mail a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send complete information - and do not merely e-mail a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the items asked for as a guide to the information I need. Because of the large number of items received, we can only use news of your event just once unless the event is advertised on the website, if the event offers a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE or if it is a benefits where ALL proceeds are given to the charity named. We also repeat major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.

MORE "HERE & THERE"
Please check your spelling before you submit a press release or show announcement - I assume your spelling is correct when I include your information in the newsletter or on the website. Of course I use a spell-checker when I write up the article, but if you are submitting names of performers in your show, I often have no way of knowing if the name is spelled correctly. It is amazing that even professional press spokesmen send in so many misspelled words - this morning my spell checker discovered "Manhattan" spelled wrong, and last week a "pro" sent me Minelli instead of Minnelli. And I checked the website referred to in the release and it was spelled wrong there as well!

Some familiar names come through spelled wrong repeatedly - Jeff Harnar (with an "ar" not an "er"), Tom Andersen (with an "en" not an "on"), etc., but I am used to that so ake the correction right away, but how do you check a name like "Steve Odabashian" (he's a pianist doing open mic in Philly)?

Here's a big cabaret bargain, for all you folks who feel prices are too high: This Thursday night, August 7th at 6:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA, Grace Cosgrove is hosting another monthly "Grace Notes: A Singers' Soiree" and for a mere $15 cover (and 2-drink minimum) you can hear some of the top performers in cabaret and catch a newcomer too! Joining Grace this month are Eric Michael Gillett (2008 Mac Award For Directing/Bistro Award For Vocals), Darren Williams (Peter Allen Variety Entertainer Of The Year), Linda Fields (From Broadway & 'cabaret Today' Hostess), Lucy Shropshire (Award Winning Vocalist & Songwriter), Nina Kaneko (Newcomer) plus a surprise guest. Premium performers at a bargain price!

As promised in the last issue, I did catch Janeann Nolan's "Forbidden Rosie" show at DON'T TELL MAMA on Saturday, August 2nd at 8:00 pm. Musical director was Ricky Ritzel and the show was directed by Randy Jones (yes, the cowboy from THE VILLAGE PEOPLE). Mr. Jones also had a guest spot in the show. Ms. Nolan has an uncanny resemblance to Rosemary Clooney - at times even vocally - who she saluted in the biography-driven show. In fact she has terrific vocals, and we would have loved to hear her sing more and read/speak a little less. The long readings between just about every number also slowed down the evening at times to the point of boredom. And it was almost all about Ms. Clooney and not much at all about Ms. Nolan. The ruse of using an open book by Rosemary to hide your notes was far too obvious - nary a page was turned as the show went on. My advice to Ms. Nolan is to read less, sing more, dump the book, and let us get to know YOU and how you relate to the chosen songs - we already know a lot about Ms. Clooney.

It's 11:30 am - and we are 50 words over our self-imposed quota so I will save the rest for the next issue. Especial alguien speclal: Espero hacerlo a su demostración esta noche - apesadumbrado falté la demostración la semana pasada.

I hope you at least scanned the news items in this issue - there are a lot of great shows listed with a lot of great performers and a lot of great songs and show themes. Is your event listed? Send me that press release!

And that is just about the way it was.

Until Thursday, then.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
