HERE & THERE
I quit smoking when I was 15 years old. Oh, and I started smoking when I was 15 years old, too! I smoked just one cigarette and it made me sick and I never tried it again. (Well, ok, I pretended to smoke for a while when I was in college just to be "cool" but couldn't bring myself to inhale). What is this all about? Well, I just ran across the street to get some milk for my cereal and noticed that cigarettes were now over $8.00 a pack (at least here in NYC). Imagine how much money I saved over the years! Imagine how much money I am saving right now over the several 2-packs-a-day folks I know!

But wait. When I was a kid (I guess in the late 40s) I remember running to the gas station on the corner for my dad to get cigarettes (2-packs-a-day, OLD GOLDS, unfiltered) and a pack cost a dollar. I sort of guess that, even though they blame it on taxes, cigarettes have increased in price at about the same rate as everything else. Gasoline was about 20 cents a gallon - now it is about $4.00 to $4.79 (I don't have a car so I only know what I see on the signs at the station at the corner of Houston & Avenue C from the bus window). When I had my first car, I could fill the tank with $5! A bottle of Pepsi (12 full ounces, that's a lot) was a nickel back in the 40s - now its $1.25.

Where am I going here? Here's the connection: When I started going to NYC cabaret shows about 30 years ago, cover charges ran about $10 to $15 - and except for the posh places, it's nearly the same today! I guess you could call cabaret nearly "inflation proof!" Oh, and by the way, the cost of a SILVER CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE membership has stayed at $20 since the day they were introduced in 2001! Just a little more than the cost of 2 packs of cigarettes today or about the cost of 5 gallons of gas!

And we hit our 250th member the other day! We're half way to our 2008-2009 CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE membership goal of 500! #250 Anthony Santelmo Jr. will soon be the owner of 2 new cabaret CDs for his collection: Cynthia Crane's fantastic "If I Knew Now (What I Knew Then)!" and a sampler CD of "the best of DC Anderson!" And we didn't stop there. This morning we signed up our 255th and 256th members (Karen Mack - NYC & Christina Crerar - DC area). Thanks once more to all for this amazing and most gratifying show of support! I wonder if we can get to 475 by Thursday - I have 2 more CDs to give away (it would sure help me pay the rent!).

Hey there, lyricists: an experienced composer with a decided cabaret/theatrical bent seeks a lyricist with the goal of developing a successful creative partnership. A strong interest in the development of material with serious social/political content would be a major plus. He is based here in the NYC area - and is well known in cabaret circles. Send me an e-mail with the word LYRICIST in the subject line with a short bio and contact information and I'll pass it along.

Seven or eight years ago I was in the Los Angeles CA area on a business trip, staying in a hotel in Orange County - about 25 miles from THE GARDENIA where I wanted to catch a show by Anne Kerry Ford. A young cabaret singer had been writing me for a few months before my California trip, and offered to pick me up at the hotel and take me to and from the show (he lived in West Hollywood, near the club). Now, talk about "sunny California" - well it rained all day, I mean really rained. Anyone living in that area knows what heavy rain can do to traffic, and AJ (his name is A.J. Teshin) drove all the way out (over an hour) picked me up and took me all the way back (around 90 minutes) and instead of arriving at our original reservation time of 7:00 pm to have dinner there, we arrived at 9:10 pm - a few minutes after the show had started. After the show we still hadn't eaten, and we found a NY-style diner/deli still open and I still remember the huge reuben sandwich I had! Then he drove me all the way back (the rain had subsided somewhat - it was after 1:00 am) and then drove all the way home. Now that's a friend to really be thankful for.

A.J. sort of dropped out of cabaret for a while (as some folks do), and actually dropped off my mailing list somehow about a year later - my e-mails kept coming back. So imagine my surprise to get a CD in the mail on Friday titled "a.j. teshin - the kurt weill project" (the small caps are his)! It has been released by LML MUSIC (http://www.lmlmusic.com/product.php?id=LML-CD-231 ) and also on iTunes! Its been loaded on my little iPod shuffle, and I can't wait to get a chance to hear it (I listen to CDs on the bus and/or subway, or while waiting for same and I've been home all weekend).

Why are we pressing for new members right now (this week especially)? Well it costs us about $500 a week to keep this operation going, not counting rent (which my Social Security check would cover neatly, but it doesn't come until mid-month). I could quit the newsletter and discontinue the website, move to Vermont, stay home and watch cable all day and night, rent a video from time to time, and get by on the SS check, I suppose. But I am not built that way. Most of the year our banner ads cover our expenses, but in the summer our banner income drops to about $200 per week. See my problem? That's why we are having our membership drive right now - please consider joining this week if you can. Click on this link: http://www.svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or click on the button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page on the website to read about all the benefits and details of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE membership. Your $20 SILVER membership (or more) would be especially appreciated.

A big thank you to cabaret-fan-supremo Greg Culling for posting a report on the Barbara Lea benefit held last Friday night at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN. The event was sold out completely - a fantastic show of support from the jazz and cabaret worlds. Congrats to Sue Matsuki and Karen Oberlin who put together a roster of star performers and managed the whole affair. It isn't too late to make a donation - just send your donation to The Barbara Lea Fund c/o Jeanie Wilson, 212 Ramblewood Drive, Raleigh, NC 27609-6404 (we suggest $20 or more).

Do we have some fantastic news stories this week - from the item at the top about cabaret events in Chicago all the way to the bottom item about a new cabaret venue in St. Louis! There are items from New Orleans, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Provincetown, Boston, London, Baltimore, South Africa, Rhode Island, New Jersey and of course NYC and more - everywhere where cabaret is performed. And (to quote Mychelle Colleary) that's what its all about.

More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - last minute items that come in just before we "go to press" as well as a report on shows seen since the last issue.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form. Events advertised on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every MIDWEEK issue. As with all live entertainment events, performers are subject to change without notice.

MORE "HERE & THERE"
Before I run out of time and space, let me tell you about a show that I saw that has just one more performance left and one you definitely (if you are in NYC this week) must take the time to see. David Gurland and Brian Farley are at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN this Thursday night at 7:00 pm with the last performance of their new show, an evening of RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN. Cabaret should be fun (depressing shows depress me - duh!) and this show is fun! The two clever lads dress alike for the show, but are as close to being twins as Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger! As every great cabaret show should, this one runs through 20 or so songs, with each song given a personalized setup and angle to make these most familiar songs sound exciting, new and in this case, a lot of fun. Inspired arrangements by the trio (the "Do, Re, Me" song from Sound of Music is about as amazing as an arrangement can be - Accidentals, watch your back) and Tracy Stark's musical direction is truly top notch. There are a few serious moments (Brian's "Something Good" from Sound of Music was most poignant) but never a dull one. There are duets, trios (with Tracy) and solos - all so well performed and so well timed there is hardly a chance to catch your breath! A very touching finale ("Carefully Taught" "We Kiss in the Shadow" "You'll Never Walk Alone") brings it all together. Bravo to the boys, brava to Tracy! Get your reservations in today - make this one a sell-out so that Phil Bond and THE BEECHMAN will offer more dates - because I want to go back a few times more.

Well, time to close off with just one last reminder: if you plan to join or rejoin as a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (and I sincerely hope you do), your membership donation will be doubly appreciated in the next four days - rent is due soon, and there just 7 banner ads running (instead of the usual 15 or so) and two of them run out this week (and were paid for weeks ago). For those who already signed on for the new membership year, a big thank you!

PS: You should see what my spell checker suggested in place of the word "Schwarzenegger"!

And now for my daily afternoon siesta! ˇLe veré esta noche en la medianoche, mi amigo especial!

And that is just about the way it was.

Until Monday, then.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
