HERE & THERE
We're finally getting caught up on the news - with just one issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE a week for two weeks, there was just no way to fit all the news of the following three weeks of shows - which is our goal. In this issue we finally broke through into August and have actually "used up" all our July news releases. Please don't forget - items usually only appear once in the newsletter and then are moved to the DATEBOOK/DIARY section of the website, where we add photos and arrange everything in date order. The first page of the DIARY/DATEBOOK includes all shows that have sent me releases for the 7 days ahead - the first day is also found on the HOME page, so if you want to see what's happening today, go there first. The second page of the DATEBOOK/DIARY lists all shows and events we have listed in the newsletter past the next 7 days (if this list gets too long we will add a third page).

Of course there are exceptions - see ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE near the bottom of every issue for details.

I did a lot of work on the website over the weekend - it was simply too hot to go outdoors, and I never made it to any cabaret events since last Wednesday, in spite of my best intentions. Waiting for a bus or standing on a oven-like subway platform in 90+ degree temperatures is no fun, especially for a "senior" like myself. The only times I left the apartment was to run (actually walk) across the street to the bodega for emergency supplies - I did my weekly shopping at the supermarket around the corner on Thursday afternoon (5% discount for seniors on Tuesdays & Thursdays).

So I took advantage of the "home time" to add all the member names & links for the 2008-2009 membership year. I had 230 to post, so it indeed was a major project. If you are a 2008-2009 member, I hope you have checked your listing and sent me any corrections - I will be using the same information to update the CHARTER MEMBER page next. Just click on the button at the top of every page marked HOTLINE MEMBERS.

Next I updated all the CD SALE pages - these pages promote the CDs of our 2008-2009 members - no extra charge - with a link to where the CD may be purchased (and an iTunes link were applicable). Each page shows a CD cover - SILVER MEMBERS ($20) can display 1 CD with GOLD MEMBERS ($75) getting up to 6 spaces. Just click on the button at the top of every page marked CABARET CDs.

Finally, I added items to a brand new page on the website where members can list a YouTube link so folks can see a performance video. We just started this page on Wednesday, so there are only about a dozen links listed right now - we expect to expand this page in the weeks to come. Just click on the button at the top of every page marked YOUTUBE LINKS.

Next up - after the CHARTER MEMBER page will be an update to the CABARET BLOGS page - where members can list links to their personal web logs. I have no idea how many of them are out there - we shall soon find out.

Here's a little known secret: the more links on other websites that link to your website, the higher ranking you get on the various web search sites like GOOGLE, YAHOO, etc. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members are linked at least once, and usually more times on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - just another benefit of membership.

I want to again remind you of the benefit by loving friends of jazz legend Barbara Lea to honor her as she faces a serious life challenge will be held on Friday, July 25th at 7:30 pm at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/ ). TICKETS ARE SELLING OUT FAST - MAKE YOUR RESERVATION TODAY! Barbara is a long-time member and supporter of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE and deserves everyone's support at this time. Top stars from cabaret and jazz will be appearing in this event including Bob Dorough, Steve Ross, Daryl Sherman, Ronny Whyte, The Loren Schoenberg Big Band, Keith Ingham, Melissa Hamilton, Karen Oberlin, Annie Dinerman, Sue Matsuki and others. Place your reservation or send your donation to The Barbara Lea Fund c/o Jeanie Wilson, 212 Ramblewood Drive, Raleigh, NC 27609-6404 (we suggest $20 or more).

Currently there are just 6 banners running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (we normally have between 10 and 15 each week) with two of them expiring at the end of this week. This is great news for current advertisers, since the banners are run in rotation randomly on every page - so with fewer banners their ad runs more frequently. But this is not such great news for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE since the banner ads are our primary source of income. That's why we are having our membership drive right now - please consider joining this week if you can. See http://www.svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or click on the button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page on the website for all benefits and details of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE membership.

Speaking of advertising on the website, you may have noted that we have some ad deals going on for the summer to try to entice folks to support the newsletter/website while also promoting their show, CD or other cabaret related offering during our "slow" banner months. Remember: the show, CD or other cabaret related item you advertise will be promoted in every issue of the twice-weekly newsletter (currently sent to over 2600 subscribers) as long as the ad is running! Details on the deals can be found at the top of this issue. Click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website for information and pricing on all the sizes, types and styles of advertising available.

This morning we signed up our 241st 2008-2009 Member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (Eric Larivee of Taunton, MA). All current 2007-2008 memberships expired on July 5th. Thanks to all for this amazing and most gratifying show of support! We need only 9 more members to reach 50% of our 2008-2009 goal of 500 for this year. Last year we achieved 478 members and we already have 35 brand new members this year. If EVERYONE from 2007-2008 renews and we will hit 512!

So much great news to tell you in this issue - check out the item on Marnie Baumer in the TODAY'S TOP STORIES section (naturally at the top of this issue), for example. Or the item from Boston about the return of rooftop dining and dancing at a legendary landmark Boston hotel with a new name - can this be the start of a new trend?

Some great shows coming up this week as well - I pray for cooler weather so I can make it to David Gurland & Brian Farley's show at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN on Thursday. I would also like to make it to the BARBARA LEA tribute on Friday, also at THE BEECHMAN.

Tuesdays: the orphan cabaret night! Why is it so difficult to get news items to list in the HOTLINE for Tuesday night events? This has been puzzling me for months. I am sure there are Tuesday cabaret events going on somewhere, but the news releases do not seem to reach here!

More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - last minute items that come in just before we "go to press" as well as a report on shows seen since the last issue.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form. Events advertised on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every MIDWEEK issue. As with all live entertainment events, performers are subject to change without notice.

ELAINE ST. GEORGE'S MOST REQUESTED SONGS AVAILABLE NOW
No matter where or what Elaine St. George sings, people always ask her about two songs in particular: That Green Dress by the late Lew Spence, and Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen. Many people have asked where they can purchase these tracks and now she's made them available in a special limited edition CD single. These songs will not be available for digital download. Lew Spence wrote hits for Frank Sinatra and Elaine was fortunate enough to meet him in 2001 and as soon she heard him sing "That Green Dress" she realized that she wanted to sing it too. She recorded a demo of it a few years ago, which delighted Lew. Thunder Road has been one of her favorite songs for 30 years, but it wasn't until recently that she started performing it. This track was recorded live, at Helen's in Chelsea in June 2007. The only place you can get them is here via Elaine's website: http://www.elainestgeorge.com/shopping.html.

MORE "HERE & THERE"
I will be taking another night off from cabaret tonight - not so much because of the heat (although the heat wave continues with temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s for the next three days), but because of a huge revision of the AREA NEWS, LISTINGS and VENUES PAGES on the website that I started over the weekend. I hope to have the new stuff in place by August 1st - which is coming up fast. If you check out the pages now you will see that I have allowed them to get a little ragged and stale, mostly because of time constraints. So I am going to redo them to make updates easier and more current. I have several more new additions and revisions in the works as well. Stay tuned.

I finally had room to include a few CD RELEASE news items - one or tow have been in my "When You Get a Chance" file for several weeks. See items near the top of the newsletter.

And finally I have a chance to write about a few shows seen - actually seen between July 12th & 16th when the weather was a bit cooler.

On Saturday the 12th of July, I caught Eric Michael Gillett's highly acclaimed "Best Of My Love" show at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM. This show marked Eric's first new solo cabaret show in several years, and it was well worth the wait. He was more than ably backed by Don Rebic at the piano and Steve Doyle on bass. A consummate entertainer, Mr. Gillett takes command of any room he performs in - years back those "rooms" held audiences numbering in the thousands (for many years Eric was singing ringmaster of the Ringling Bros. circus) so Eric is well practiced in holding the attention of an audience. This show had a song list that included pop songs and standards (and pop songs that have become standards). It was indeed one of the most carefully crafted and delivered shows seen this year. Some folks have aptly named this one "Cabaret 101" since it truly presents cabaret performance how it should be done. Love songs abounded - some romantic and some poignant, all brilliantly performed. Many songs are presented with brief anecdotes from Eric's life, but this was far from one of those boring "autobiographical" confections often seen in cabaret. Instead it was a genuine performance of songs that truly express a performers point of view so that by the end of the show one hungers for a sequel. My favorite song of the set was the very touching "Unfinished Business" (Menken/Spencer), and it was a special treat when Eric reprised several Craig Carnelia songs - the first cabaret show I saw starring Mr. Gillett was "Cast of Thousands - The Songs of Craig Carnelia" and it was great to hear them once more. Mr. Gillett has one more show at THE METROPOLITAN ROOOM - on Tuesday, July 29th at 7:00 pm. This is one that every cabaret fan (and performer) should catch.

Eric Michael Gillett was also featured in the next show I went to - Grace Cosgrove's GRACE NOTES - a Singers' Soiree, presented at DON'T TELL MAMA on Tuesday, July 15th. This is a monthly series of shows, hosted by Ms. Cosgrove, for the purpose of giving singers a chance to test new material they are working on for upcoming performances before a "live" audience. The show always features experienced performers as well as newcomers. This time several cabaret stars were on the list in addition to Mr. Gillett, including Anna Bergman, Mary Foster Conklin and Ms. Cosgrove herself (who also has a series of solo shows ongoing each month at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM). Newcomers this time were an exciting new all-girl vocal group called MAMA SAID, led by Tracy Stark and directed by Lenny Watts (with vocalists Mary Carey, Amie Carey and April Henry), Lawrence Anthony Florek, and Adam Alexander. It is impossible to review performers on the basis of just one or two songs, but I must say that Ms. Bergman was astounding - shades of Betty Buckley! And the all-gal group - this was their debut - should grow to be major performers in town very quickly. Energy, talent and clever harmonies abound. Mary Foster Conklin is so at home and comfortable at a microphone, one often overlooks her talents and delightful vocals - she makes it all look so easy. Ms. Cosgrove sang some selections from her solo show "Jump/Cut" - not to be missed when performed on Saturday, August 16th at 5:00 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM. The next GRACE NOTES show at DON'T TELL MAMA will be announced shortly.

Craig Pomranz is currently appearing at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm through August 6th, and I was at his show on the 16th of July as part of a "double header." The show included several songs from his new CD, and the seasons (with special attention to summer) were the theme. Mr. Pomranz has great vocals, especially well suited for ballads. This was opening night of this show (with musical direction by Stephen Boccino) and there were a few rough edges to the patter, but Craig is an experienced performer who quickly recovers from any mistakes (and a faux pas or two). The repartee between him and Mr. Boccino was at times a bit too rehearsed-sounding, but entertaining all the same. In fact, entertaining sums it all up. Craig has just three more performances coming up - Wednesdays July 23rd & 30th and August 6th - so if you are looking for an entertaining evening of song and story for a summer evening, this is one to check out.

The second part of the double-header on Wednesday night July 16th was also at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - Bill McKinley's "Does A Bear Sing In The Woods?" show at 9:45 pm. I long for more appearances of Mr. McKinley in cabaret - he has one of the most beautiful voices on the scene. His vocals can be so smooth and creamy. Once a member of the famed Flirtation's, Bill remains a favorite of the gay community, often appearing at benefits, etc. His openly-gay themed CDs have become renowned for their honesty and of course his amazing vocals. With Christopher Marlowe at the piano, Bill presented a show that will probably be remembered for a long time by those who attended. It seemed like there were two shows performed - not unlike the famed story of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups - formed by a collision of a chocolate truck and a peanut butter truck. The "good" Mr. McKinley sang some delightful and touching ballads, intermixed with some songs by the "bad" Mr. McKinley that were truly of questionable taste. From some of the patter presented and songs sung, one could call Bill "the master of the single entendre" with no room for cleverness and wit (Judy Gold, watch your back). It was almost like watching an episode of "Family Guy" with a lot of "potty talk," suggestive props and sound effects simulating flatulence, etc. This was the last show of the 4-week Wednesday night series of shows.

Well, time to close off - exactly 12,000 words - with just one last reminder: if you plan to join as a member, your membership donation will be doubly appreciated in the next 10 days - rent is due soon, and there are no new banner ads on the horizon and the ones currently running were paid for weeks ago. Membership donations have slowed to a trickle as well so it looks like I will have to send out an "emergency" reminder to all members from last year who have not rejoined. For those who already signed on for the new membership year, a big thank you!

And now for my daily afternoon siesta!

And that is just about the way it was.

Until Monday, then.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
