MESSAGE BOARD IS AVAILABLE FOR SPONSORSHIP - WRITE FOR DATES
The BANNER AD on the most visited page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. This is the only advertising item that appears on this page - and appears at the top of this page whenever someone reads one of the messages as well. This page is actually visited more times each day than our home (opening) page! Cost of this exclusive placement is $95 per week for the first 2 weeks (there is a 2-week minimum) and then $75 per week continuous thereafter. SUPERSIZE banner only. In addition you may take advantage of your membership discount or rebate ($20 one-time rebate for SILVER members, 20% discount for GOLD members for the rest of the membership year, etc.) And you can take an additional 5% discount if you pay using a credit card and PayPal. Click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website for information and pricing on all the sizes, types and styles of advertising available. Write for availability - some weeks already reserved.

HERE & THERE
I anticipated that this issue would be a short one, with the 4th of July weekend looming out there, plus the fact that most venues have not yet sent me their July schedules. But the word must be getting out that the best place to promote your cabaret event is CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, since my e-mail box has been inundated with news these past few days! As a result I have packed this issue and have several items on hand for July 15th & beyond to include in Monday's issue!

Please remember, unless you are running an ad on the website or offering a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, your item will probably appear in the newsletter only once. Banner advertiser items appear in every issue - shows offering discounts appear in the Thursday issues. But all items appearing in the newsletter are transferred over to the website's DIARY/DATEBOOK pages (http://www.svhamstra.com/CabaretEventListing.shtml) in date order, and remain there until the date of the event passes.

Fact is, we are forced to change some policies in an effort to shorten the newsletters and also lessen duplication from issue to issue. First off, to qualify for inclusion every Thursday issue, shows making discount offers to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE must be $5 or more off the cover. And the discount information must appear on press releases, group mailings and fliers/postcards promoting the event. The rule always has been that discounts for CH members must be equal or greater than any other discount offer the event might be advertising.

The rumor on the street has been around for some time that RUBY FRUIT (531 Hudson Street, NYC - 212-929-3343 - http://www.rubyfruitnyc.com/ ) - and its associated downstairs room RITA MAE'S, would be closing. Now it is official - the club/restaurant will close its doors with a final day of operation on Sunday, June 29th (Gay Pride Day here in NYC).

With the combination of the 4th of July INDEPENDENCE DAY celebration (and 4-day weekend), my own personal birthday on Sunday, July 6th, and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE birthday party on Wednesday, July 9th, there will be no issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on Thursdays July 3rd & 10th. I'll repeat this information in the HERE & THERE (part 2) section at the bottom of this issue.

Call it deja vu all over again. About 10 years ago, cabaret teacher/performer/singer/songwriter Kevin Scott Hall was stabbed by someone riding on a bicycle as he was innocently walking down a street in Manhattan. Kevin was hospitalized for some time - it was one of this injuries that could have resulted in death if the knife was thrust just an inch or two over. Two others were also attacked in the same way around the same time. The perpetrator was discovered, arrested and tried (Kevin testified at the trial) and convicted and sent to prison for 9 years. Well, a few days ago a woman was similarly stabbed by a man on a bicycle - and this time it was caught on video by a surveillance camera - and the police identified and arrested the same individual - Kevin was interviewed last night on the local CBS news.

Congratulations to the new members of the BACA (Boston Association of Cabaret Artists - http://www.bostoncabaret.com/ ) board of directors. The BACA Board announced four new Board members at their annual meeting on June 21st. They are Lynda D'Amour, Patricia Fitzpatrick, Tom LaMark, and Stanley Wilson (Treasurer). They will be joining Kevin Luey, Chrys Alam, Harriet Goldberg, Dennis Livingston, and Annie Sharkey who have another year of their terms. BACA also expressed their thanks to retiring board members who will be completing their terms this summer. They are: Hildy Grossman, Brian De Lorenzo, Prudence Humphreys and Lizanne Shectman.

Dody Goodman, who was presented with a MAC Board of Directors award in 2007, passed away on Sunday, June 22nd at age 93. The TV-Stage-Screen actress had been ill for some time and had lived in the Actors Fund Home in Englewood since October. At her request there was no funeral. A memorial event is planned for the fall.

Having a show or cabaret event? Is your show listed on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and/or the newsletter? There is no charge for your show to be listed - you don't even have to be a member! Remember, unseen and untold means unsold. You don't even need a press agent to prepare your press release - just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible.

A few minutes ago we signed up our 150th 2008-2009 Member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (Amy Wolk!). All current 2007-2008 memberships expire on July 5th. We had a little head start because this year all 85 tickets sold to our 18th Birthday Party, to be held on Wednesday night, July 9th, included a 2008-2009 membership. Thanks to all for this amazing and most gratifying show of support!

More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - last minute items that come in just before we "go to press" as well as a report on shows seen since the last issue.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form. Events advertised on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every MIDWEEK issue. As with all live entertainment events, performers are subject to change without notice.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website, in the DATEBOOK/DIARY and in the twice-weekly newsletter? Just e-mail a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send complete information - and do not merely e-mail a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the items asked for as a guide to the information I need. Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible, and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail. The more information the better.

Because of the large number of items received, we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule: If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in every issue of the newsletter; If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter; Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas; We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.

MORE "HERE & THERE"

Sometimes something simple creates something complicated (and often expensive). As mentioned in the last two issues, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is now being created and published using a new computer (the MacMini is in the shop for repair and a new iMac has taken its place). Problem was, the computer is new but my software was old - purchased when I was still using a Power PC 800 MHz G3 Mac. The new computer uses an Intel 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. Not everything from the "G3" era works on the new device, as I began discovering over the past several days.

I use four very important applications to do 95% of the work on the website and the newsletter. DREAMWEAVER helps me create the code the web pages. PHOTOSHOP helps me re-size, crop and post all the photos, banners and other graphic items on the website. BBEdit is the program I use not just to write all the newsletters and the articles, it also codes all the items I write into html format, which is then "pasted" into the actual pages that DREAMWEAVER builds. Finally, I use MICROSOFT WORD to actually handle the press releases that arrive here in .doc format (about 50& of the items sent me). Except for BBEdit - an inexpensive program that I update regularly - the other three programs are all "showing their age." Total cost to replace the three? Close to $1400. In fact, on Tuesday, after frustrating attempts to use an inexpensive program to do the photo work, I purchased the latest version of PHOTOSHOP - using up a good portion of the funds raised from the 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY (income from banner ads has dropped to near zero - the ads currently running were paid for weeks ago, with only one new ad sold and paid for recently). That's why I had to cut back nearly completely on attending any shows these past few days!

But the new version on this new computer not only works like a charm, it works faster and has many more features than before. The next $500 I can set aside will go for an updated DREAMWEAVER (current version is from 2002). I think I can get an "educational" version of WORD for about $200. But when you figure the number of years I used these programs - every day - about $100 a year or $2 a week - I have gotten more than my money's worth.

Least expensive addition is a larger backup drive - the old computer had just 80 gigs on the hard drive - this one has 250 gigs! And because the new system software is much larger, I am already using over 100 gigs - too large for the 80 gig backup drive. But hard drive costs are considerably lower than ever, and I can get a good 250 gig drive for around $120.

Did I mention that the new computer has a built in camera & microphone? I just tested it a little, but my bedroom/office needs a lot of redecorating before I go "on line" with it on SKYPE or iChat. And I need to get a makeup kit (or some gauze to cover the lens) as well.

I saw Marta Sanders at METROPOLITAN ROOM on Friday, June 20th at 7:30 pm and Laura Hull in the same room on Sunday the 22nd at 7:00 pm. Due to time constraints I was unable to write up the normal "short reviews" on these shows - and since I haven't been to a show since the 22nd, I can write about them now.

There is only one phrase one can use to describe in a nutshell Marta Sanders. She is the "Queen of the 11 o'clock Number" - the show stopper that closes the show. For Marta a microphone is hardly necessary - I think the folks in the pizza shop a 1/2 block away from THE METROPOLITAN ROOM could hear her at times during the show (it is possible that the folks at sister club GOTHAM could hear her as well, 3 blocks away). A sort of combination of Ethel Merman and Bette Midler, Ms. Sanders demands your attention - and always deserves your applause. With John McMahon at the piano and Kelly Briggs directing, the show was a powerhouse performance by one of the best in cabaret (unfortunately her appearances are not as often as her fans deserve). Occasionally Ms. Sanders allows herself to be overburdened with props and characterizations - give me more of the pure Marta and less of the "Marta playing someone else". While certainly entertaining, these bits could be shorter, giving time for more of the truly dramatic and more serious songs she does so well. The show closed with the 11-o'clock number to end all 11-o'clock numbers - written for Marta by Jay Jeffries and the aforementioned Mr. McMahon. Incredible!

I have to preface my next comments with the reminder that I am not a fan of most jazz performances - but I am a fan of Laura Hull (her HULLABALOO CD is one of my favorites). So I had mixed feelings about Laura's show, performed in partnership with her musical director Rio Clemente at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on June 22nd. Mr. Clement opened the show with a solo piece - a "South Pacific" medley. It was far too overbearing and "show-offy" for my taste. The same could be said for Mr. Clemente's mid-show Gershwin tribute. If I were a Gershwin, I would object - too long, too involved and it strayed much too far from the melody and became a complicated "look how clever I am" showpiece. That said, Miss Hull was her usual glorious and charming self - her vocals are most enjoyable and comforting. She is able to build good feelings and joy into the most mundane of lyrics - the mark of an experienced and audience-pleasing entertainer. At times faced with an arrangement that bore no resemblance to the cadence of the lyric, Ms. Hull persevered and managed to bring the meaning of the words to the fore. Steve LaSpina on bass is one of the best in the business and as usual gave an outstanding performance.

Several important projects are on my "TO DO" list over the weekend. First I have to build a banner for someone that will start its run on Sunday.

Next, I have 150 membership cards to create and mail to all the new 2008-2009 members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. I have about 100 blanks on hand and only about 30 envelopes and no stamps, so it means I am off to STAPLES and to the post office later today or tomorrow. I better pick up some printer ink cartridges as well - last time I printed a big batch of cards the printer froze and wouldn't work until it was fed a new supply of ink - there are 4 cartridges and they all seem to dry up at different times - but always at a critical time. The printer cost less than $100 (after rebate) but the total of 4 cartridges cost $55! And for some reason, black ink costs $5 more than colored ink. I think a congressional committee is called for on this!

Plus the deadline for the program booklet is tomorrow (June 27th) and I have to put all the program ads together, write up the text portions and get everything off to the designer and then when it comes back get it printed and collated.

Finally, I have (at this mornings count) 140 e-mails to answer. About 50% just require a short and simple response, after I google a little and check my files. The rest will take a bit longer.

Please send in your membership renewal - or new-al - this week to take advantage of the full year of benefits that are yours as a member. A word of warning - we haven't needed to employ the services of uber-membership-promoter Craig Coursey yet, but he is waiting in the wings, chafing at the bit and raring to go after July 6th help us break our record membership totals of 2007-2008. He is known to twist a few arms to get the job done.

Once again I tried to cover all the new cabaret related news items in the listing section above - items from previous newsletters can be found in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section on the website at http://www.svhamstra.com/CabaretEventListing.shtml . If your news item has not yet appeared it could be because we haven't reached your "performance week yet" - we try to write of events taking place in the next 3 weeks or so. Items only appear once in the newsletter (unless it is a regular event featuring different performers each week, a banner advertiser, a benefit, or offers a CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount).

And that is just about the way it was.

Until Monday, then.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
