SAN FRANCISCO: PHIL PERRY AT YOSHI'S

Smooth jazz and R&B vocalist Phil Perry will perform at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600 ) on Saturday & Sunday, August 23rd & 24th at 8:00 pm. It takes especially great powers of interpretation for a singer to take a song definitively recorded by a legendary artist and give it new life with a fresh interpretation. Phil Perry takes on the ultimate challenge with the opening track of his new album, the indelible "You Send Me," recorded in classic style by the peerless Sam Cooke, whose own unique phrasing style actually shapes the melody of the tune, which he wrote. Yet Phil Perry transforms the song while still retaining its essence, opening in "old school" style and then transmuting it into contemporary soul music. Few singers around today could have done it but those who have experienced the magic of Phil Perry's talent will not be surprised. There is a $33-$36 cover.

The Ault Sisters have now turned to jazz, a genre in which their signature and sublimely seamless vocal harmonies really shine. The Toronto-based trio got back in the studio with their longtime producer, Greg Kavanagh (BKS, Wendy Lands), and an A-list of local players, to record a keenly-anticipated jazz album: Timeless. Musicians featured on the record include Canadian jazz greats Robi Botos (piano), Ted Quinlan (guitar) John Johnson (saxophone) and William Sperandei (trumpet), alongside the ace rhythm section of bassist George Koller and drummer Ben Riley. NYC: CD RELEASE PARTY WITH KAREN OBERLIN & SEAN HARKNESS

Karen Oberlin & Sean Harkness will perform songs from their new Miranda Music CD 'A Wish' at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 ) on Wednesday, August 20th at 7:00 pm. A Wish, like a hope or a dream, whether simple or complex, is always personal. Yet the wishes of two artists can be expressed in one creative project like this one by Karen Oberlin and Sean Harkness. Karen had wished for years to make a duo recording with only guitar and vocals, and she found the ideal partner in Sean. When they first played together, spontaneously in an impromptu performance, they both knew they had to make an album together, or that became their great, mutual wish. Kitty Skrobela of Miranda Music, as is her way, made their dream come to life, their hope become reality, their wish come true. The fascinating, eclectic mix of extraordinary songwriters on this album, like Dorothy Fields, Paul McCartney, Fred Hersch and Joni Mitchell, unwittingly collaborated on this project as the song springboard for what these two artists wished to express. Collectively, Karen and Sean have brought to life this multi-faceted, deeply felt wish with a deliciously personal perspective on life and love. ... as if anything else matters. Beyond chansons, Betty has immersed herself in diverse musical disciplines, including jazz, improvisation, and Hindustani Classical. She has released three CDs: Enchante, a collection of jazz serenades; La Chanteuse de Paris, chansons francaises celebrating the music that first fed her dreams and led her to a life of exploration; and La Lumiere du Son, a mix of raga-style drones, Sanskrit chants, soundscapes, jazz and classical inflections and the pure sonic qualities of the French language. Betty will present a collection of French cabaret songs from the 30's to the 60's which evoke feelings and memories of Paris, love, longing, and happiness. Songs made famous by singers like Edith Piaf and Josephine Baker. She will also pay homage to beloved jazz standards sung in French and English. WASHINGTON, DC: JOE HERRERA - ARTIST IN RESIDENCY AT BOHEMIAN CAVERNS

Trumpeter Joe Herrera will serve at Artist in Residency at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800) on Tuesdays in August with performances at 7:30 & 9:00 pm. Seeing a jazz gig in the District that doesn't feature Joe Herrera is almost a challenge. The ubiquitous trumpeter is at the center of the city's burgeoning jazz scene and plays an important role as both bandleader and sideman, co-directing the fine Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra with saxophonist Brad Linde on Mondays. A native of Yuma, Arizona, Herrera began his musical journey at age 10, when he wanted to play the saxophone, but instead started on the trumpet because his father already had one. He became serious about music as a freshman in high school and would often raid the record collection his band director kept. Classic players like Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard and John Coltrane caught the young musician's ear, and from there, his interest took off. After studies at Mesa Community College and Arizona State University, as well as stints as a musician on cruise ships, he began working regularly in and around Phoenix. An opportunity then arose for Herrera to move to DC, which he did in 2003.
