CABARET IN THE JAZZ CLUBS FOR NEW YORK CITY FOR THIS DATE
Please Note: We will only list events we deem as cabaret-style in the Jazz Clubs starting March 1, 2015

MANHATTAN: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, June 14th, 21st & 28th at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

Son of the legendary guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, New Jersey native John Pizzarelli has become one of the most recognizable faces and voices in contemporary jazz. John Pizzarelli has had a multi-faceted career as a jazz guitarist, vocalist and bandleader, known around the world for the cool jazz flavor he brings to classic standards, late-night ballads, and each of his hugely entertaining live performances and masterful recordings. His most recent CD release, Rockin' In Rhythm, combines the enduring work of Duke Ellington with Pizzarelli's incredible ability to reinterpret the Great American Songbook. Rockin' In Rhythm is the follow up to Pizzarelli's critically-acclaimed 2008 release, With A Song In My Heart - John Pizzarelli Sings the Music of Richard Rodgers, which featured Don Sebesky's Grammy-nominated arrangement of "Johnny One Note." He was one of the few musicians in his generation who learned and perfected his craft directly from alliances with Jazz Masters. But his most important and meaningful relationship was with Miles Davis. Wallace was mentored by Miles Davis after Miles heard him in 1983 at his birthday gala performance in Carnegie Hall. Their association peaked when Miles chose Wallace to share the stage at his historic performance in Montreux in 1991. After Davis died, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams and Roney banded together and toured the world in tribute. There is a $20-$35 cover.

BOSTON: ROOMFUL OF BLUES AT THE REGATTABAR

In celebration of their 45th anniversary, Roomful of Blues, the jumping, swinging, rocking, award-winning band, will release their new live CD, 45 Live, on Tuesday, July 30th. For the recording, the band hosted a three-day party in March of 2013 at one of their favorite haunts, The Ocean Mist, in Matunuck, Rhode Island. They packed the club to capacity, playing to roaring ovations each night. The resulting album, 45 Live , is among Roomful of Blues' crowning achievements. The album is a lightning-in-a-bottle blowout, showcasing the larger-than-life vocal and instrumental power of the band. At 45-years-old, New England's Roomful of Blues has been around even longer than its own record lable, Alligator Records. Roomful don't simply recreate the famous and obscure 78s and 45s of those years. Inspired by the spirit of the groundbreaking bands of the post-World War II decade, they've breathed new life into vintage songs, infusing them with boundless energy and fiery, swinging solos and vocals. For the last two decades, Roomful has been led by Chris Vachon, one of the most underrated guitarists in the blues. For 40 years, their hard-charging horn section has been sparked by Rich Lataille on tenor and alto sax. Energizing the band on Hook, Line & Sinker is their terrific new vocalist, Phil Pemberton. BOSTON: JON CLEARY AT THE REGATTABAR

New Orleans' best-kept secret, Jon Cleary, will perform at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Thursday, July 24th at 7:30 pm. Cleary has a new record in the pipeline. His dream team of musicians has been recruited for an album of original compositions that he feels strongly will prove to be his best album yet. The tracks were recorded over several days deep in the bayou country of Louisiana and subsequently honed in his studio in the old Bywater district of New Orleans. Made in collaboration with multi Grammy winning producer John Porter (B.B. King, Keb Mo, Ryan Adams, Los Lonely boys) each of the carefully crafted songs is a delicate balance of the smooth and the rough; instantly memorable hooks over a set of sophisticated and soulful arrangements. A blend of musical intelligence with direct, accessible pop simplicity that draws from the tradition and yet is distinctively separate from it, these songs represent the many aspects of Cleary's musical personality as a multi instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter. There is a $20 cover.

Upon graduating Nick immediately began his masters degree at the University of Toronto where he has been studying with Chris Donnelly, David Braid and David Occhipinti, and has been conducting research into synthesizer pedagogy. Nick's love of music began at a young age with his grandfather's purchase of a Fats Waller CD. In his late teens he quickly established himself on the Ottawa jazz scene by playing in many of Ottawa's local jazz spots including Vineyards and Cafe Paradiso (now closed). In his high school years Nick was actively engaged in just about every school band available to him. He is also an alumnus of the Ottawa Junior Jazz Band and the Nepean All-City Jazz Band. Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, and many old school big bands were big influences for Nick in his formative years. Since, he's greatly expanded his palatte and enjoys drawing influences from Avishai Cohen, Brian Blade, Hiromi Uehara, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Snarky Puppy, Tool and Rage Against the Machine to name a few. NYC: DANIEL RODRIGUEZ & THE JESSE LYNCH TRIO

Daniel Rodriguez & The Jesse Lynch Trio will perform at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Wednesday, July 23rd at 7:00 pm. Daniel Rodriguez, you may recall, was the New York City cop who helped bring the country an uplifting spirit of promise and hope after the September 11th terrorist attacks with his stirring rendition of "God Bless America". At 16, he presented his first recital at Carnegie Hall; at 17, he was billed as the "17-year-old Baritone." Then, at age 19, he put music aside to raise his family, going to work to make ends meet. He worked at the post office, and then as a police officer in the New York City Police Department. It was in uniform that local New York audiences began to discover his voice and his passion for the music he sang. Before the events of 9/11, he was already quite well known around New York City as he had sung in "Broadway on Broadway," in local opera and musical theater productions. As an "official singer" for the NYPD Ceremonial Unit, he sang at many functions, and later, at memorials in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks. After 9/11, then-New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, helped set up an audition with Placido Domingo. Daniel studied with Maestro Domingo and the staff at the Young Artist Program in Washington for a year and half. An established recording artist with five earlier solo CDs to his credit, Daniel released his first Spanish language album in June of 2013. On POR TI VOLARE, he lends his powerful tenor to the salsa music that he grew up with and sings a moving duet with his father on the Puerto Rican favorite "En Mi Viejo San Juan." The album features lively renditions of Spanish- language standards such as "Malaguena Solerosa," "Perfidia" and "Besame Mucho," as well as his rendition of the Andrea Bocelli-identified title track and a reprise of the tune sung in Italian. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
