Born in Boston, Mover relocated to Florida at age 12 and took up the horn the following year. At the age of 13, Mover came under the influence of Ira Sullivan, who he remains close friends with to this day. He studied with highly regarded jazz veterans such as Phil Woods, Al Cohn, and Richie Kamuca. While still a teenager, Mover had already sat in at the old Half Note in New York with the likes of Roy Eldridge, James Moody, and Zoot Sims, and others. In recent years Mover has also cultivated a sound and style as a vocalist, as heard on his 2008 release It Amazes Me ... Following up that strong effort on his new two-disc release My Heart Tells Me, Mover divides his time between two different but closely related aesthetics. There is a $15 cover.

SAN FRANCISCO: DAVID MURRAY INFINITY QUARTET AT YOSHI'S

The David Murray Infinity Quartet will perform at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) on Thursday, July 3rd with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Few musicians in jazz history have proven more vigorously productive and resourceful than David Murray. During the past 35 years, from the moment he first visited New York as a 20-year-old student, playing in a walkup loft, in 1975, David has careened forward in a cool, collected, rocket-fueled streak. He has released over 150 albums under his own name. Yet more impressive than the numbers is the constancy of two abiding achievements: as a tenor saxophonist, he has perfected an instantly recognizable approach to improvisation that even in its freest flights acknowledges the gravity of a tradition he honors more than most; and he has altered the context for his improvisations as an infinite mosaic of musical challenges and explorations. David Murray goes down as a worthy successor for some of the biggest names in jazz, and he is now contributing to the rise of young talents such as Lafayette Gilchrist, a young pianist who has already been widely acclaimed by the critics. There is a $19-$28 cover.

His enduring career has covered virtually the entire jazz landscape, from free jazz with trumpeter Don Cherry and avant-garde in the mid-'60s, to film scoring and his ultimate embrace of Latin music throughout the '70s and '80s. Barbieri began playing tenor saxophone with his own band in the late '50s and moved to Rome with his Italian-born first wife Michelle in 1962, where he began collaborating with Cherry. The two recorded two albums for Blue Note: Complete Communion (1965) and Symphony for Improvisers (1966), both of which are considered classics of free group improvisation. He also collaborated with Steve Lacy, Abdullah Ibrahim, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley and the Jazz Composer's Orchestra, Stanley Clarke, Airto Moreira, Chico O'Farrell, and Lonnie Liston Smith during this period. After many years of limited musical activity due to the passing of his first wife Michelle (also his closest musical confidant and manager) and his own triple bypass surgery six weeks later, Barbieri returned stronger than ever with the 1997 Columbia offering Que Pasa, the fourth-highest-selling contemporary jazz album of that year. Since that reemergence, he has continued to release albums, including The Shadow of the Cat (2002), which won Billboard's prestigious 2003 Latin Jazz Album of the Year award and garnered a Grammy nomination, and New York Meeting (2010), his latest release.
